Harris and Ullman's Multiple nuclei Model
Geographers Chauncy D. Harris and Edward L. Ullman created a the multiple nuclei model which states that a cities structure is made up of more than one node, or center in which the cities people and activities revolve
around. The multiple nuclei model of urban development demonstrates the understanding of American cities in the later 20th century. This model represents the fact that particular activities revolve around certain nodes
whereas others try to avoid that node in particular.
The multiple nuclei model is described through Harris the Nature of Cities which he wrote alongside with Ullman in 1945. In the Article he describes the layout of a city. "Harris and Ullman made the argument that the city's downtown core (or CBD) was losing its importance in relation to the rest of the city and should be seen
less as the focal point of a city and instead as a nucleus within the metropolitan area . The automobile began to become increasingly more important during this time which made for greater movement of residents to the suburbs. Since this was taken into consideration, the multiple-nuclei model is a good fit for sprawling and expansive cities."(about.com)
